BBF: Year In Review

May 20, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Bronco Bench Foundation hosted its 2nd Annual All-Sports BBQ and Student-Athlete Day at Schott Stadium on Sunday, May 18. The event produced record setting attendance numbers of 300 enthusiastic Bronco fans that included current student-athletes, coaches, alumni, BBF members, parents of current/former student-athletes and a variety of friends who are loyal supporters of Santa Clara athletics.

Several attendees commented on the pregame student-athlete recognition ceremony, not realizing how much our student-athletes had accomplished this year, both in the classroom and in athletic competition. Additionally, several attendees were touched by the tribute to Pat Malley, on the 23rd anniversary of his passing.

The All-Sports BBQ is an event that truly captures the essence and the mission of the Bronco Bench Foundation; supporting the scholarship needs and celebrating the achievements of Santa Clara's student-athletes since 1962!

Here's a brief look at some of the events that the Bronco Bench Foundation has organized over the past year. These events really helped support both the scholarship needs of our student-athletes, as well as the intangible support they provide directly to the athletic programs by keeping the SCU community focused on Bronco Athletics.

  • BBF SJ Golf Classic - featuring master of ceremonies, Brent Jones '85, and honoring legendary SCU basketball coach, Dick Davey.
  • BBF Reno Train Trip - bringing SCU alumni together from the classes of 1957-2007 in order to support our men's basketball team when they faced the University of Nevada Wolfpack on the road.
  • BBF Pregame Receptions - featuring chalk talks from our men's basketball coaching staff and our other 18 varsity athletic programs.
  • providing nearly 250 young alumni with an opportunity to exhibit their Bronco spirit before the SCU/Gonzaga basketball game that ended-up being a double-overtime thriller!
  • BBF Endowment Dinner - thanking those donors whose endowed and living scholarships make it possible for so many of SCU's student-athletes to attend our wonderful university; and proudly introducing Comerica Bank as this event's first title sponsor.
  • LA President's Club Golf Tournament - featuring master of ceremonies and special honoree, Mike Carey '71. We had our largest turnout in the event's history.
  • BBF Program Support Events - 10-15 other events/receptions that highlight and build community around our 19 varsity athletic programs.
