NOTES FROM THE BENCH
Nov. 3, 2008 BBF Members and Bronco Fans, Friday, Nov. 7, 2008 marks the beginning of the Men's Basketball season as they host CSU Monterey Bay. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. With high hopes for the Men's Basketball program and new promotions from the Bronco Bench Foundation, the gameday atmosphere will be one you won't want to miss! Here are some important updates of which to take note: Correction: the last issue of Bronco Sports provided a calendar of events indicating that there would be a pre-game reception on November 9. That was a typo. Our first BBF pre-game reception for men's basketball will be on Friday, Nov. 14 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Team Room (same location), prior to the Broncos taking on CSU East Bay at 7 p.m. BBF Nightly Raffle: Win an all-expense paid trip for 2 to the WCC Conference Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. (March 6-9)* (includes: air transportation, hotel, game tickets, VIP Tournament access, and BBF hospitality suite privileges). Purchase raffle tickets at the BBF information booth ($10 each or 3 for $25). Every night, a winner will be drawn; nightly winners will receive BBF and/or SCU athletics clothing/apparel among other prizes. Nightly winners will also automatically be entered into the Grand Prize drawing for the WCC Vegas Trip. Additionally, all raffle tickets purchased at two "mystery" home games will also be entered into the Grand Prize drawing (Hint: 1 will be a Conference game and 1 will be at a non-conference game.). The Grand Prize drawing will be held and the winners announced during the second half of the SCU vs. St. Mary's game on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009. You will not need to be present to win, but if you know you've made it into the Grand Prize drawing, you'll probably want to attend the SCU vs. St. Mary's game just for the karma alone! Chalk-Talks and BBF Team Spotlights: Once again, chalk-talks will begin promptly at 6:20 p.m. and the BBF Team spotlights will begin at 6:30 p.m. Here is the schedule of featured BBF spotlight teams:

Oct. 6, 2008 BBF Members and Bronco Fans: This Fall has been filled with a few twists and turns for the Broncos. While the historically strong men's and women's soccer programs have had a rocky start, volleyball and men's water polo have more than picked-up the slack, achieving national rankings of No. 20 and No. 12, respectively. Meanwhile, anticipation is still building for basketball, as coaches Keating and Mountain look to take the Broncos to new heights. Can you believe we're just one month away from their first game? In the meantime, here's a summary of how all of your favorite Bronco teams are fairing this Fall. Program Updates: Men's Cross-Country: made significant improvement over their results from last year at the Stanford Invitational. Led by sophomore, Robbie Reid (#57) who nearly cracked the 26 minute barrier, the Broncos finished 14th overall in a very large 28 team field. The Broncos are looking ahead to hosting their home invitational, the Bronco Invite, on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Baylands Park. Women's Cross-Country: recently won the Charles Bowles Invitational at Willamette University defeating an impressive field that included Portland, Boise State and Idaho. Additionally, the Broncos had two Top 10 performances by sophomore Stephanie Wilson (#3) and senior Veronica Vazquez (#6). The Broncos are looking ahead to hosting their home invitational, the Bronco Invite, on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Baylands Park. Men's Soccer: Recently suffered two difficult losses in their opening weekend of league play, including an overtime loss to Gonzaga. The Broncos are on the road against St. Mary's on October 12, and then host LMU on Friday, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium. Women's Soccer: Plagued by injury, the Broncos have struggled this fall, but when it counted, they took the then-No. 2 UCLA Bruins to a 2OT 0-0 draw on national television. The Broncos begin league play this week as they host USD on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium. Volleyball: First breaking into the top 25 (then No. 23, currently ranked No. 20), then going 2-0 in their first weekend of conference play by beating LMU and then-No. 15 Pepperdine at home, Bronco volleball is clearly on the rise! The Broncos will be on the road this week (Portland/Gonzaga), but will return home on Thursday, Oct. 16 to host USD for a televised match. Men's Water Polo: May be having their best season ever (and they haven't even started to play in their new home pool - the Sullivan Aquatics Center!). They are presently ranked No. 12 in the country, coming off a 4-0 weekend at the Convergence Tournament in Southern California. The week before, the Broncos upset then-No. 10 UC Davis 10-8 at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest! Up next for the Broncos, UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, Oct. 12. Events Update: Saturday, Oct. 18: Cross-Country Program Support BBQ following the Bronco Invitational at Baylands Park (Sunnyvale, CA). Additionally, the Broncos will be holding a 5k Fun Run for fans of all ages immediately prior to the intercollegiate races. For additional information about the Fun Run, please contact Felipe Montoro at (408) 554-4886. For additional information about the BBQ, please contact Steve O'Brien at (408) 554-7846. Friday, Nov. 14: First BBF Pre-Game Reception for Men's Basketball prior to the Broncos taking-on CSU East Bay. The reception begins at 6 p.m. in the team room, chalk-talk and team spotlight to begin at 6:20 p.m. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16: Men's Water Polo Program Support reception immediately prior to the Broncos taking-on UC Santa Cruz in the brand new Sullivan Aquatics Center! The reception will begin at 11 a.m. in the team room and the match begins at Noon. Finally, we still have seven seats available for the BBF Team Trip to Las Vegas, Nev. (March 6-10) for the WCC Conference Tournament. This trip will surely be one for the ages and is expected to sell-out soon! WCC Basketball, Las Vegas and your Santa Clara Broncos - that's a winning trifecta!!! Click here to find out how you can join us on this special team trip. I hope you all have been enjoying the cooler weather and look forward to seeing you soon at one or more of these upcoming events and athletic competitions.

June 27, 2008 BBF Members and Bronco Fans, On behalf of Santa Clara's student-athletes and the Bronco Bench Foundation Board of Trustees, we would like to thank you for your continued support of student-athlete scholarships at Santa Clara University through the Bronco Bench Foundation. As we come to the end of another successful fiscal year, we are struck by the dedication and support exhibited by the members of our Santa Clara family. Our ability to provide the scholarship resources necessary for SCU's coaches to recruit and retain the very best student-athletes in the country is directly tied to your ongoing support of the Bronco Bench Foundation. We couldn't do any of this without YOU and for that, we THANK YOU! Over the past year, the Bronco Bench Foundation has organized events to provide people with an opportunity to come together, support the Broncos and, ultimately, build a strong sense of community around Santa Clara Athletics. Again, we thank you for participating and supporting these events: plus, a host of pregame receptions and individual Program Support Events. In a few weeks, we will be distributing the new BBF Membership Brochure. You'll notice that we've added additional benefits for our members, including tickets to the Endowment Dinner, tickets to the All-Sports BBQ/Student-athlete day at Schott Stadium, tickets for our annual team trip and entry into our signature golf tournaments, among other things. We really want to encourage our members to take full advantage of these benefits because we're confident that you'll find that the more time you spend around Santa Clara Athletics the more likely you'll come to the conclusion that "Every day is a great day to be a Bronco!" Next year, the fun begins on Monday, September 8, 2008 at the Cinnabar Hills Golf Club, where the Heritage Bank of Commerce will once again be presenting the 30th Annual BBF Golf Classic, featuring Master of Ceremonies, Brent Jones '85 and Special Honoree, Bill McPherson '54. BBF Members and Bronco Fans: I wanted to thank everyone who was able to attend our 2nd Annual All-Sports BBQ and Student-Athlete Day at Schott Stadium on Sunday. I also wanted to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who volunteered to work the event as well as those who donated so much of the food and beverages. I am confident that we are well on our way towards making this an annual Bronco Bench tradition. We had a record setting 300 enthusiastic Bronco fans in attendance, and that included current student-athletes, coaches, alumni, BBF members, parents of current/former student-athletes and a variety of friends who are loyal supporters of Santa Clara athletics. A few attendees commented on the pregame student-athlete recognition ceremony, not realizing how much our student-athletes had accomplished this year, both in the classroom and in athletic competition. Additionally, several attendees were touched by the tribute to Pat Malley, on the 23rd anniversary of his passing. I recap the event and highlight these comments for those who were unable to attend because I think this event captures the essence and the mission of the Bronco Bench Foundation; supporting the scholarship needs and celebrating the achievements of Santa Clara's student-athletes since 1962! In addition to the All-Sports BBQ, here's a brief look at some of the events that the Bronco Bench Foundation has organized over the past year, that really help to support both the scholarship needs of our student-athletes, as well as the intangible support they provide directly to the athletic programs by keeping the SCU community focused on Bronco Athletics.
So, again, I thank everyone who helped to make all of these events a reality. Whether they be attendees, volunteers or sponsors, you all are the reason that Santa Clara University is such a special place, and why so many people, including myself, are proud to call ourselves Broncos! As we approach the end of the school year, now is a great time to renew your BBF membership! Please take a look at your giving history, and if your membership isn't current, please consider supporting student-athlete scholarships at Santa Clara through the Bronco Bench Foundation by making your gift today. As Santa Clara operates on a fiscal calendar, that ends June 30, please be sure to make your gifts prior to that date. There are several ways for you to make your annual gift to the Bronco Bench Foundation: ATTENTION RECENT ALUMNI (Classes 2003-07): Donate $25 or more to the Bronco Bench Foundation by June 30, 2008 and receive a FREE gift certificate to Blondie's Frozen Yogurt (2905 Park Avenue, Santa Clara, Calif.), courtesy of Kelley Lund, SCU Class of 2005 and owner of Blondie's Frozen Yogurt. BBF Members and Bronco Fans:
Last night we said goodbye to the seniors on our men's basketball team and what better way to do so than with a 87-55 routing of the USF Dons! This Saturday, we'll be saying goodbye to the seniors on our women's basketball team as they look to end the regular portion of their conference season with a win against the Portland Pilots. Coming up, both programs will look to earn NCAA Tournament births at the WCC Conference Tournament in San Diego, CA, from March 6-10. And while basketball turns their attention to post-season play, our Spring sports are doing extremely well, gearing-up for their respective league seasons. Women's Water Polo recently scored a 14-5 victory against UC Santa Cruz in the final game to be played in the Leavey Pool, prior to the construction of the new Sullivan Aquatics Center. Men's Tennis took down conference rival Gonzaga in a 4-3 nail biter over the weekend and SCU Baseball is off to an impressive 3-0 start and looks to further improve their record as they take on SJSU this weekend. BBF Members, BBF Young Alumni and SCU Broncos Fans:
Bronco Bench Foundation men's basketball pregame and halftime receptions have been a long-standing tradition for BBF members. They provide an opportunity for Bronco fans to socialize with classmates, friends and fellow Broncos, and hear the latest scouting report about that evening's opponent directly from one of our men's basketball coaches, all while enjoying refreshments courtesy of the Bronco Bench Foundation. Beginning this year, Bronco fans will have one more reason to renew their BBF membership and claim a front row seat at our pregame receptions; program previews from our other varsity athletic programs. Each reception will feature one of Santa Clara's other varsity athletic programs and attendees will have an opportunity to meet student-athletes from that program and get an insider's look on their current or upcoming season. Here is the schedule of the teams to be featured this season. November 9, 2007 - CSU Monterey Bay - Women's Soccer To account for these featured program presentations, beginning in December, pregame receptions will follow the following time-line: 1 Hour before tip-off: BBF Receptions open to BBF members 40 Minutes before tip-off: A chalk-talk and scouting report about that evening's opponent from a member of the men's basketball coaching staff. 30 Minutes before tip-off: A program update from our featured team of the evening. For questions about the Bronco Bench Foundation or our pregame receptions, please contact me or see one of our student-athlete representatives at the Bronco Bench Information table, set-up at all home men's basketball games, located directly to your right as you enter the Leavey Center for all men's basketball games. Hope to see you at our next pregame! Go Broncos... Steve O'Brien

BBF Members and SCU Broncos Fans:
In addition to marking the start of Santa Clara's basketball season and the peak of the Fall sports' playoff season, November also serves as a time for us to pause and give thanks for the wonderful people who have enriched our lives, for the positive experiences that bring us joy and for a variety of blessings that have been bestowed upon us over the course of the past year. At Santa Clara University, we are fortunate to have so many things for which to be thankful: * Our Fall sports programs have once again led the way in setting a competitive tone for the year: - Men's Cross Country- set a new average team time school record of 26.03 for the challenging 8k Crystal Springs course, a 25 second improvement over the program's previous best. Senior Michael Delaurenti set a school course record individual time of 25.27, finishing third overall in the WCC Conference meet. - Women's Cross Country, although missing senior Adriane Puetz due to a stress fracture, also set a new average team time school record at the Crystal Springs course, and were lead by freshman, Melissa Conlin, who set a new school course record in the 6k at 21:48, finishing 8th overall in the WCC Conference meet. - Men's Soccer is presently ranked #5 in the nation, and undefeated in the West Coast Conference, has had an impressive overtime victory against UCLA and a buzzer beater against USF already this season. - Women's Soccer, plagued by an unprecedented number of injuries this season, overcame adversity to become the #1 team in the country, and presently still hold a top 10 national ranking. - Women's Volleyball- after a tumultuous start to their season, have become the #1 team in the West Coast Conference by beating teams like then #14 ranked San Diego on national television on the road! - Men's Water Polo- presently ranked #15 in the country, due in part to a recent overtime victory against then #10 ranked Loyola Marymount at LMU's pool in front of 500 screaming Lion fans! * Our BBF Members and Bronco fans are the best in the nation! Whenever we mention the success of our athletic programs, we must also take the time to note that their success is largely a product of your support. From attending games, rounds, matches or races to supporting athletic scholarships through the Bronco Bench Foundation, you have made it possible for so many young men and women to attend Santa Clara University, receive a Jesuit education, and represent the Broncos at the NCAA Division I level. For your generosity, we are infinitely thankful. * Our coaches embrace the University's ideals and work tirelessly to make certain that our student-athlete's have a well-rounded and meaningful undergraduate experience, ensuring that intercollegiate athletics continues to play an integral role in the University's overall educational mission. Few schools can boast a coaching staff as dedicated to the institution, committed to the welfare and betterment of our student-athletes and instrumental to the advancement of the University's mission, inside and outside of athletic competition, as Santa Clara University can. We are incredibly thankful for all that they do. We hope that your year has been as prosperous and bountiful as ours has been, and we hope that all of your good fortune extends well into the future. On behalf of the Bronco Bench Foundation, we would like to wish you and your family a happy and tranquil Thanksgiving season. Sincerely, Steve O'Brien

BBF Members and SCU Broncos Fans:
Well into the Fall of its 45th year, the Bronco Bench Foundation and its members have been more active than ever in their quest to support Santa Clara's student-athletes. So far this year, the Bronco Bench Foundation has: - Hosted the 29th Annual SJ Golf Classic; raising over $80,000 for student-athlete scholarships at SCU. - Introduced a series of Program Support Events for Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Women's Volleyball, Cross-Country and Men's Water Polo to enhance the visibility of these programs while thanking our members, whose generosity has made it possible for our coaches to recruit and retain the top student-athletes in the country. - Revived the legendary Reno Train Trip, scheduled for November 16-18, 2007, to provide fan support for our Men's Basketball team while they're on the road against the Nevada Wolfpack. - Collaborated with the Ruff Riders to provide SCU's Young Alumni (2003-2007) with the hottest ticket package in college basketball, reminding them, that you're in college for 4 years, but you're a Bronco for life! Bronco Bench has organized all of these events to support our student-athletes, energize the Santa Clara athletics family, and to gather the resources to support nearly 1/3 of all of Santa Clara's athletic scholarships; the largest contribution of its kind in the West Coast Conference. Beginning tomorrow night, a number of SCU's Coaches, former student-athletes and volunteers will be kicking-off the Bronco Bench Foundation's Fall Fund Drive by calling people like you to: a) Thank you for your ongoing support of student-athlete scholarships at Santa Clara through your contributions to the Bronco Bench Foundation; b) reminding you that it's not too late to renew your Bronco Bench Membership for this fiscal year (July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008) and be eligible to receive all of the exclusive benefits reserved for BBF members, such as discounted/complimentary basketball tickets, access to pregame receptions and program support events, a subscription to Bronco Sports magazine, and/or All-Sports passes; and c) updating you and encouraging you to attend upcoming SCU athletic events, some of which will be aired on National television! Aug. 10, 2007 BBF Members, The Fall sports are starting to report and in its 45th year, the Bronco Bench Foundation is more committed than ever to generating support for Santa Clara's student-athletes. We're definitely off to a tremendous start, as over 180 golfers have already committed to play in the 29th Annual Bronco Bench Golf Classic, brought to us this year by our title sponsor, Heritage Bank of Commerce. Kicking-off the year with an event of this magnitude, we plan on maintaining the momentum throughout the Fall by reviving the once legendary Reno Train Trip. An epic trip steeped in SCU legend and lore, it's the perfect way to get away for the weekend and watch your Santa Clara Broncos take on the University of Nevada Wolfpack in Reno, Nevada. As dedicated BBF members, we are providing you with the first chance to express interest in attending this exclusive team trip (we will leave very early A.M. on Friday November 16, 2007 and return midday on Sunday, November 18, 2007) (NOTE- space will be highly limited, only the first 25 spaces can be guaranteed). The estimated cost of the trip will be $500/person (slightly less for double-occupancy), and it will include: - Continental breakfast at SCU on Friday 11/16 So, please let me know if you would be interested and able to attend. We're gonna take the Broncos to Reno and the Broncos are going to take it to the Wolfpack! ALLLLLL ABOARD!!!! Go Broncos... Steve O'Brien
July 13, 2007 Bronco Fans and Bronco Bench Foundation Members: Across the department, records were shattered during the 2006-2007 academic year: *Average student-athlete cumulative GPA rose to 3.046, a new all-time high! *The Broncos won their second West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup in the past three years! *The Bronco Bench Foundation raised over $1.5 million dollars, roughly enough to fund 33 athletic scholarships! Now, maybe the meek might cower at the prospect of having to build upon these tremendous achievements, but not the Broncos... They can't wait for next year! It all starts as the Heritage Bank of Commerce presents the 29th Annual Bronco Bench Golf Classic on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club, featuring legendary Bronco and 49er, and this year's Master of Ceremonies, Brent Jones '85. REGISTER ONLINE NOW for the BBF Golf Classic - http://www.scu.edu/athletics/golf.cfm I know I'm looking forward to next year, where every day will be a great day to be a Bronco! Go Broncos... June 12, 2007 Bronco Bench Foundation Members, As the 2006-2007 academic year comes to a close, we wanted to be sure to thank each of you for your generous contributions to the Bronco Bench Foundation. Without your continued support, Santa Clara's student-athletes may not have been able to achieve all that they have achieved in the classroom, in athletic competition and in the community over the past academic year. *In the classroom, SCU's student-athletes achieved a cumulative GPA that exceeds 3.0 for the first time in recent history, while maintaining a 4-year average graduation rate that is the highest in the conference. *In athletic competition, the Broncos won the West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup for the second time in the past three years, while teams and individual student-athletes received a variety of Conference and NCAA awards. *In the community, Santa Clara's student-athletes shared their talents with others through the Bay Area Women's Sports Initiative, Sacred Heart Nativity School, Homesafe Women's Shelter and a variety of other philanthropic organizations. These are just a few of the reasons that the Bronco Bench Foundation is proud to be in their 45th year of supporting Santa Clara's student-athletes. This summer, be sure to check out the new website at www.broncobench.com for exciting updates and important news about the Bronco Bench Foundation. Finally, if you haven't renewed your Bronco Bench membership this year and you still want to have been an integral part of the Broncos' success, there's still time to act. May 15, 2007 Bronco Fans: After narrowly losing to the Toreros of San Diego on Friday and Saturday, the Broncos' Baseball team bounced back and earned their most important victory of the season on Sunday. Not only did they beat the #6 team in the country in a 9-inning nail biter, but they also secured the coveted West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup for Santa Clara's Athletic Department for the 2nd time in the past 3 years! Awarded to the school with the top performing all-around athletic department in the Conference, the Commissioner's Cup is the ultimate achievement for West Coast Conference schools. Conference championships by Men's and Women's Soccer and solid second place finishes by Men's Basketball and Women's Crew helped lead the way, but this accomplishment was clearly the result of a department-wide effort. Perhaps what's most impressive about the Broncos receiving this award this year, is that Santa Clara's student-athletes also raised their cumulative GPA above 3.0 for the first time ever and have maintained the highest 4-year rolling average graduation rate in the West Coast Conference; further demonstrating their commitment to excellence in the classroom as well as in athletic competition. If you want to be a part of the Broncos' winning tradition and help Santa Clara's student-athletes continue their all-around excellence, become a member of (or renew your membership to) the Bronco Bench Foundation today!
